Easter Holiday in London? Don’t Forget to apply for an ETA

Spring holidays are a popular time for city breaks and mini getaways. If you’re heading to London, it’s important to be aware that the UK has introduced new entry requirements, including a mandatory pre-authorisation.

As of 2 April 2025, new travel regulations apply when entering the United Kingdom. Under the new rules, Danish citizens travelling to England or Northern Ireland for leisure must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) prior to their trip.

“We don’t expect Danish travellers to experience difficulties obtaining the ETA. However, since we’re not used to filling out forms to travel to the UK, we want to highlight that this new requirement is now in place,” says Karin Tranberg, Executive Vice President, Travelcare at SOS International.

Application Required Before Departure
The ETA is a digital travel authorisation that must be applied for and approved before entering the UK. Every traveller, including children, must hold a valid ETA prior to travel.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends applying well in advance—ideally at least three working days before departure.

SOS International also reminds travellers that the UK is no longer part of the EU. As a result, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does not cover medical treatment in the UK. Travellers should ensure they have adequate travel insurance.

Key Information About the ETA

  • The ETA is a pre-authorisation that allows you to board a plane, ship, train or bus bound for the UK or Northern Ireland.
  • It is not a visa.
  • The ETA is typically valid for two years and allows multiple visits of up to 180 days each.
  • Apply well in advance—preferably at least three working days before departure.
  • Children also require an individual ETA.
  • You can apply via the UK ETA app.
  • Or apply online at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta
